What makes or breaks a tattoo design is the idea behind it. Too often people want to include 10 ideas into one tattoo.
A tattoo should be simple and easy to read. At most, you want three objects and no more. Two objects and accents like leaves or filigree look much better and one large object with accents is the most visually appealing.
Larger IS better. Taking up the entire space looks better Than cluttering the area with a bunch of tiny pieces. Tattoos look better when they look like they belong where they are and you didn’t just spill a box of stickers all over your skin.
Redundancy is a design killer. You do not need to get an image representing what you are trying to portray and then describe the tattoo with words as well. It’s messy and pointless. Think about if you got a Chinese symbol for fire would you also write fire under, over or through the kanji just so everyone knows it says fire? Then don’t do it with your other tattoos. No one wants to read about your tattoo they just want to see a beautiful piece of artwork. The meaning behind it is yours alone to know.
